Grocery apps fall into two groups. Budgeting apps such as Monarch Money and Skwad cover all of your spending, and groceries are one line in that budget. Grocery trackers such as GroceryTrack, Groceries Tracker and GrocSnap read the receipt itself, so they can tell you which items, categories and stores your grocery money goes to.
When you choose, ask four questions. Does it read every line on the receipt, or only the total? Does it take digital receipts from email as well as paper ones? Does it need your bank login? And does it run on the phones and computers your household actually uses?
Each comparison below uses the other company’s own site, help pages or store listing, dated, and says plainly when the other app is the better choice.
